Evening Primrose Oil DY Life, 60 Softgels, 60 Servings

DESCRIPTION

DY Life Evening Primrose Oil is a supplement formulated with evening primrose seed oil (Oenothera biennis), a natural source of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), a unique Omega-6 fatty acid involved in inflammatory regulation and metabolic balance. Evening primrose oil is widely used in functional nutrition for its beneficial effects on skin health, hormonal balance, and overall well-being.

GLA serves as a precursor to lipid mediators involved in modulating the body’s inflammatory response. In the body, it is converted into dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid (DGLA), which contributes to the synthesis of anti-inflammatory prostaglandins such as PGE1. These compounds play an important role in regulating inflammation, vascular tone, and immune response, helping maintain physiological balance during periods of stress or inflammation. (1)

Through these mechanisms, evening primrose oil has been studied for its role in supporting skin health, particularly in the context of dry, reactive, or inflammation-prone skin, as well as for its contribution to joint comfort and mobility by influencing inflammatory processes within tissues. It also helps support skin barrier integrity, reduce transepidermal water loss, and maintain skin elasticity. (2)

Beyond its effects on inflammatory balance, evening primrose oil is also recognized for its potential role in supporting hormonal balance and women’s health. GLA may influence prostaglandin synthesis, compounds involved in hormonal signaling and the regulation of symptoms associated with hormonal fluctuations.

Evening primrose oil has also been investigated for its cardiovascular benefits, particularly through its influence on cholesterol and triglyceride metabolism. In addition, it may help support vascular elasticity and healthy circulation, contributing to overall cardiovascular balance. (3)

KEY BENEFITS

Skin Health, Hydration & Barrier Integrity

GLA is a key structural component of the epidermal lipid matrix - the lipid layer that forms and maintains the skin barrier. Adequate GLA intake supports the synthesis of ceramides (the primary lipid building blocks of the skin barrier), reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL), and maintains skin hydration and elasticity.
Clinical research specifically supports evening primrose oil GLA for dry, sensitive and atopic skin conditions - with studies demonstrating improvements in skin hydration, barrier function and the reduction of inflammatory skin symptoms. This makes DY Life Evening Primrose Oil a widely relevant supplement for UK consumers dealing with dry, reactive or sensitive skin - conditions that are particularly common in the UK's cold, indoor-heated climate.

Hormonal Balance & PMS Support

GLA's conversion to series-1 prostaglandins - particularly PGE1 - is the mechanism through which evening primrose oil influences hormonal balance. Prostaglandins are hormone-like signalling compounds involved in regulating the physiological processes of the menstrual cycle, including uterine tone, fluid balance, mood regulation and pain sensitivity.
Evening primrose oil is one of the most widely used natural supplements for PMS (premenstrual syndrome) - supporting comfort during premenstrual phases by modulating the prostaglandin pathways associated with cramping, mood changes, breast tenderness and fluid retention. Research supports GLA supplementation for reducing PMS-associated symptoms, particularly when taken consistently throughout the month.

Menopause & Perimenopause Support

Evening primrose oil is also commonly used by women during perimenopause and menopause. The decline in oestrogen during this life phase is associated with changes in prostaglandin balance, skin hydration (the skin barrier becomes more vulnerable as oestrogen declines) and inflammatory regulation. GLA's anti-inflammatory and prostaglandin-modulating effects may help support comfort and physiological balance during this transition - including for symptoms associated with vasomotor changes such as hot flushes. Consult your GP for specific menopausal health management.

Inflammatory Balance & Joint Comfort

Through its conversion to DGLA and anti-inflammatory prostaglandins, GLA contributes to regulating the body's inflammatory response. Research supports evening primrose oil for joint comfort and mobility, with evidence for reductions in joint stiffness and discomfort associated with inflammatory conditions. This anti-inflammatory mechanism operates at a systemic level, making evening primrose oil a relevant supplement for those with chronic low-grade inflammation alongside its hormonal and skin applications.

Cardiovascular Health & Lipid Balance

Evening primrose oil has been investigated for cardiovascular benefits through its effects on cholesterol and triglyceride metabolism. Research suggests it may help support healthy lipid profiles and vascular elasticity, contributing to cardiovascular balance. PGE1 produced from DGLA also supports healthy vascular tone and circulation - complementing the lipid metabolism effects with direct vascular activity.

Antioxidant & Cellular Protection

Vitamin E (D-alpha tocopherol) in this formula provides 13.4mg per softgel at 112% NRV - above the full NRV - in its natural, most biologically active form. Vitamin E acts as a fat-soluble antioxidant protecting cell membranes from free radical damage, and additionally preserves the stability and potency of the GLA content in the softgel - preventing oxidative degradation of the polyunsaturated fatty acid during storage and after ingestion.
