A Winner vs A Champion

A Winner vs A Champion

In the pursuit of success, whether in sports, life or business, the terms “winner” and “champion” are used interchangeably.

However, a deeper exploration reveals a profound distinction between the two.

By understanding this crucial difference, it can inspire us all to transcend mere victories and strive for enduring, lasting greatness.

The essence of a winner vs a champion

A winner is someone who achieves a specific goal or triumphs in a competition. The immediate success, the tangible reward and the fleeting moment of glory, the here and now.

Whereas as a champion embodies a much deeper commitment. Champions possess what many refer to as the sense for the historic, recognising pivotal moments that can alter the course of their lives and tackle them with unwavering determination.

Look at the story of Michael Johnson for example, who understood the significance of the 1996 Olympics and trained relentlessly, refusing to even entertain the notion of failure. He even wore gold shoes in an Olympic final before he’d even won! He did the hard work, put in countless hours to perfecting his craft, out-working his competitors and entering the contest with the mindset that no one could beat him.

Dorian Yates, a champion through and through

Of course, just look at our founder Dorian Yates! A six-time Mr. Olympia who’s cemented his status as one of the greatest of all time!

Rising through the ranks of bodybuilding from the amateurs, right the way to the pinnacle of the sport… the Olympia stage.

This is the important thing to mention, he didn’t just want to “take part” each year and be happy to be here and participate. No way, he was coming to win, the Sandow trophy was already his and every other competitor would have to fight for second place.

This is the mindset of a champion.

For example, look at the 1993 Mr. Olympia contest. It was quite possibly the most dominant win in Olympia history, one call out was needed for the judges to make up their minds.

This was his second Olympia triumph as he won his first the year prior, so for this year he wanted to truly make a statement and prove that it wasn't just a one off. The press in the United States were heavily suggesting that either Kevin Levrone or Flex Wheeler would win the title this year and put that upstart from across the pond back in his place on home soil. They suggested that his 1992 triumph in Helsinki had been just a European blip.

Did Dorian let this phase him in the slightest? Absolutely not!

Instead he used it as fuel to produce arguably his greatest physique and continue to stack his trophy cabinet.

He put in years of hard work, blood, sweat and tears to ultimately reach his goal of becoming the best in the world. And not just doing it once, but consecutively he collected the Olympia title six times.

Just as he says; “Nothing of great value comes without some kind of pain or sacrifice.”

Champions don’t make excuses

Like we said, champions aren’t here to take place and just make up the numbers and they certainly DO NOT make excuses. They never console themselves with the thought that perhaps they’ll get another chance. Instead, they understand that they truly may never be in such a position ever again. With this belief in mind, they execute their game plan to perfection and rise to the occasion each time.

This is their historic moment, their time to shine, their chance to forever change their destiny.

But all this does not come without pain and sacrifice. Each and every champion that ever lived had dedicated countless hours to perfecting their craft, their full, undivided attention has gone to reaching their goals.

How badly do you want it?

“Without pain, without sacrifice we would have nothing.” - Chuck Palahniuk, Fight Club.

The call to championhood

Make no mistake, victories are absolutely commendable and should be rewarded. But the pursuit of championship demands more, it’s the call for recognising defining moments and committing to values that uplift yourself and those around you, not even striving just for personal success but for the betterment of all.

So whether that’s in sports, business, family or in life, let’s challenge ourselves to move beyond the pursuit of momentary victories and embrace the path of becoming true champions, leaving the footprints of inspiration and change for generations to come.
